Cross Country Suite – 50 Years On

Nelson Riddle composed this series of pieces describing various areas of this country in 1958 for Buddy DeFranco with whom he had worked in the Tommy Dorsey Band. The work won a Grammy in 1958 for “Best Original Instrumental Composition – (More Than Five Minutes Long)”.  It was not a critical success; however it remains some of Nelson’s most original and fresh work.

The Riddle Family worked with Universal to generate a reissue of the project in 2008; this was a special achievement as it really never received its due in 1958 other than the Grammy. The work was performed live in Chicago in  2007 & 2009 by the Chicago Jazz Orchestra. Buddy DeFranco reprised his original solo performance from the album for the 2007 concert. The audience was extremely receptive. Plans continue to evolve for further live performances of the work.
